And who exactly is the target audience for a regression?

I would not say that this happens "a lot". This is the sort of thing that one tells themselves to justify their own introversion.

Change "sales tactics" to "pickup attempt" and I think you'll find it a lot harder to dismiss it as a reason - not because it's true, but because of how much of a headache it is to get on the bad side of people who insist it's true. I'm gay (and active), but don't really present as such, and it's remarkable how often I receive, "I wish this creep would stop hitting on me/generally being an unattached male in my presence," vibes. I didn't want to believe it myself, until I noticed the markedly reduced occurrence when speaking to women who were visibly much older than I am. For women my age and younger: I'm not interested, but they think I'm interested, and that is a convo killer.

On the guy side, they usually seem too preoccupied to talk, or are moving with friends/family where interjecting as a stranger would be weird (because you either need to address the group or else you seem like you're attempting to break them off into a conversation away from that group). Though I'll give that the "too preoccupied" is sometimes merely an affect hiding, "This loser has nothing to offer me."

Does "almost 100% of the time" count as a lot? So far almost all chatty strangers I met have been either crazy or Amway cultists.

I’ve just about got this working on ios using the a-shell app as a terminal to run the git commands, with shortcuts set to run them when Obsidian opens and closes.

I use git on my own forgejo instance.

There are millions of Macbooks out there that will be out of MacOS support one day. If this project diverts just a fraction of them from becoming e-waste for a little, it will be a win.

And then beyond that, there is simply no laptop manufacturer that meets the quality of Apple's hardware design. I like Macs for their hardware, the software is a compromise. A linux macbook would be my ideal laptop.

dont most ppl just throw these laptops in the trash, or does someone give you money to turn an out of support mac in somewhere

> does someone give you money to turn an out of support mac in somewhere

Yes, marketplace

What do you mean? Smoking rate have certainly declined since vapes have been a thing.

I think if you take smokers and nicotine vapers combined, it has probably gone way up

That is a very different statistic.

I think it's less about that farmer's market produce being healthier, and more about it being tastier. I've encountered plenty of people saying things like "I don't like tomatoes" when it turns out all they've eaten are pale, out-of-season tomatoes from the supermarket.

A big part of getting people to eat better is educating them about seasonality and what good produce should taste like, so that they end up actually liking it.

A farm by our cottage had a sign out last year, selling vegetables. We bought some cauliflower and had it for dinner. It was supposed to be a side dish but it was so darn good I don't even remember the main dish.

Later I got some vegetables from a friend who had grown them at a local allotment garden. Made some vegetable soup with them and I swear it's one of the best meals I've had, and I've had some real nice meals.

Flavor in each case was so far beyond what I can get in the grocery stores here it's hardly comparable.

A lot of it comes down to what the person you're responding to said, seasonality. I grew up in a very rural farming area and now live in a very large city. While the produce at the grocery store is generally inferior to that of being near a farm, when things are in season, it is at least comparable. That apple you buy in July is never going to be as good as one bought in the fall, it doesn't matter where you buy it from.

If your goal is just to easily sync your own ebook library with a Kobo device, I've found that something like this isn't really necessary.

There is a config file on the stock OS that you just need to change, and you can point the Kobo store to your own instance of Calibre Web.

This lets you sync and download your own books to the device over wifi.

I played around with KOReader a bit but found the stock software simpler to use. All I really need is to not be tied to an ebook store.

Commenting to provide a confirming data point. I bought a Kobo Libra H2O a few years ago. Unboxed it, modified the config, and immediately started using it with Calibre. It has never participated in any manufacturer's "ecosystem" and has functioned well in a totally "offline" capacity.

I was sad to hear newer Kobo devices are shipping with Secure Boot. I've never reflashed my Libra H2O (it's my daughter's and I'd never be able to get it away from her long enough to replace it) but I liked knowing that I owned the device. I'm sad to hear the new ones are owner-hostile.

Can also confirm, I have used the config modification to sync my Kobo Forma with Calibre Web since new.

A quick config change to the store URL to point to Calibre Web, and some setup in Calibre Web and you're good to go.

This is the guide I followed: https://brandonjkessler.com/technology/2021/04/26/setup-kobo...

I used the Kobo with its ecosystem, even bought a few books with the store. Also disappointed to hear that they seemingly don't allow unlocking the bootloader on their newer devices... If that's true.

I don't care about secure boot / a locked bootloader so much as the ability to unlock it.

I'm not sure about that. The relevant discussion here is at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46194337 but from the linked Github issue it's not at all clear that a true bootloader lock is involved. It should still be possible to boot something else on device, it's just likely to require a lot of work.

Could you share what the config item is that you need to change for this? Or point to some docs?

Wow - had no idea this was possible!

That’s awesome. Going to add this change to my Kobo - I already self host a bunch of stuff on a Pi, will add Calibre to the list

You can also use Dropbox to sync your data on some kobo devices. It used to be disabled, but you can enable it manually in one config file.

Or, of course, you can just plug USB and it'll sync (and charge).

is this the file? KOBOeReader/.kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf

what did you change?

This is the guide I followed when I did mine years ago: https://brandonjkessler.com/technology/2021/04/26/setup-kobo...

People “just don’t work that way” when they have to exercise will power, because they can obtain what they want.

That’s not really the case when discussing school meals though, when kids will generally be eating what is put in front of them.

Oh, so was your point that there’s no reason to feed them to children, but there are good reasons for NNSs for gen pop?

Every time I’ve gotten a large bill that hit my deductible, going back to the provider and asking to pay cash without insurance has resulted in a lower bill.
