> No they don't know and if they did I would get fired obviously.

This already shows the problem. They assume they are paying for your time exclusively, while you are doing just enough to satisfy them.

The fact you go such lengths to hide the fact that you are three timing them also shows that you know what you are doing is not acceptable.

Most likely you are in breach of the employment contract.

You are also somehow justifying this to yourself. The problem is that such behavior causes loss of trust and makes other 95% of honest peoples' life painful.

I don't see an issue since they are happy with my output. Who's getting hurt here ? That I'm working more efficiently then someone hired to do the job 9-5 ?

so you want me to make less money, couple myself to an employer who doesn't offer any upward mobility or job stability because you think its immoral that finally the dynamics have tipped the balancing pole in the workers favor?

are you not speaking out of jealousy here?

>are you not speaking out of jealousy here?

I am not envying your situation at all.

People who are getting hurt are people like you and me. Employers are seeing your comments. They are reading about others who do this. They are losing trust. When they pay you, they expect you to work for them diligently and not just up to a level of KPI. This behavior will make them to force people to come to work. Remote working will be gone. They will start paying less because they expect people to two time anyway. Overall society loses due to loss of trust.

So you gain something, but society as a whole loses.

P.S. Even if my wife is very happy with me, it doesn't mean that I can have another relationship. Either I have an agreed open marriage or I am cheating. A different thing, but I would say similar.

How am I getting hurt here my income is 3x

The KPIs are there specifically to measure time to results not how long you stuck around the office for

How am I responsible for your situation (I don't even know you) and why do you look to others to do it for you?

Are my employers here right now in the room with us ?

Are you going to blame me if your wife leaves you tomorrow because she read you hinted at wishing you were with somebody else?

Like how far does this go ? What else do you plan on blaming me for ?

Breach of contract is a civil issue, they could probably fire you without recourse (contract is void) but that's the extent of it if you didn't do anything else wrong.

It's not only reaction against child marriages. Thr prevailing culture is to marry off girls as early as possible, affecting their higher education. It also causes lower workforce participation among women as at the point of marriage they typically neither have higher education nor they are employed. Then immediately after marriage there is demand for bearing child, after which they no longer have time to look for employment.

Early marriage basically kills job opportunities and subsequently female workforce participation is lower.

I think we are missing another angle of getting the data. Information is also power. Power to influence people (e.g. Cambridge Analytica). So paying will not stop the data collection. Actually I doubt anything will, unless people really push the regulators to do their job.

Not many movies are made on people getting hit by lightning. Perception beats stats and facts.

yes, feels and vibes beat rationality and science.

Is it any surprise the US is backsliding?

It is funny because we now know that in the 1970s there were far more randos kidnapping people than today. The FBI actually got pretty good at these crimes.

At least today we have a totally competent and sober FBI Director, and an FBI focused on solving actual crimes. </s>

Can't tell if it's backsliding or reverting to the mean :(

probably the same thing, but mine has moral judgment.

We don't know how many things in nature work. For example, we don't fully understand our own brain. As long as it can be replicated, we are fine.

In case of AI we have a better chance to understand what it is doing through chain of thought and explainability. Nature never gave us that..

Frankly nowadays Windows is rage inducing. Dark patterns, annoying pop-ups, mandatory single sign-on.

It is more of an attempt to get real world IDs.

Yesterday I was forced to enter phone number for first time for "login verification". I didn't request any 2FA. They also made it clear they would save the number. Alternative was not logging in. Probably a A/B testing attempt.

Well, "don't be evil" is over.

Android is over (with the next major version there will be no sideloading). And with all those new feeling-based laws, "hate speech" and snitch sites (Meldestellen) the internet is basically over (or you need legal protection insurance and loads of free time).

The Internet will die off, just like TV, BTX, mail boxes, BBSes, and all the stuff before.

I did adjust my hobbies and passions accordingly, I have now a workshop and a garden.

I decided to use appliances (for example feature phone and Garmin navigation system and reMarkable) and real services (bank clerk in an actual bank).

A smartphone is a spy device, a ad screen, and a single point of failure.

For email look into stalwart and host it for yourself.

It's stupid how phone numbers have become a proxy indicator for "is a distinct and legitimate human". Do they enforce this in all geographies or are there still places in the world where Internet is available but cellphones and phone numbers aren't common?

It is stupid but today that makes sense in places where SIM card requires registration by full first and last name - which is majority of the world. You have to register SIM otherwise phone will be working with emergency services only. And that gives the possibility of identifying you by your phone number on whatever service, platform that asks you to provide phone number for security reasons.

I really don't want to spread gloom here but last 15 years felt like stripping down anonymity by both law and social engineering. And now we're facing even more direct online verification under the classic pretense of "think of the children". The Wild West period of the Internet is over and what soon will arrive should concern us all.

I think it's more likely that it's to limit people getting unlimited storage with multiple accounts by limiting it to 15gb per phone number

> Google has confirmed that it's testing a 5GB storage limit for some new Gmail users, unless they add their number.

If 5GB users don't have to enter phone, then I think they will not be able to stop unlimited usage anyway.

Yeah. They'll never be able to stop it, but I wouldn't be surprised if just adding a little extra roadblock makes a measurable difference in their storage costs

They forced me to enter a phone number many years ago.

And for society as a whole, we are getting to a state where corporations have incredibly large amount of money and gradually, hard power too. OSS is kind of small rebellion that we need to sustain so that we don't that tiny bit of freedom we have.

P.S. I think East India Company's history should be a mandatory lesson for everyone on the ability of a single company to take over a subcontinent. At its peak they had their own army, ruthless efficiency due to a largely meritocratic structure, and was successful in taking over multiple kingdoms.

To be frank, I have always thought of "Now I switched to Linux and am happy" to be some kind of meme that appears on every Windows discussion.

Until it happened to me last month. The ads in Windows somehow popped up during important Zoom calls and I couldn't find a way to skip or switch off immediately. In addition to that, my paid version of Minecraft stopped working.

Using Windows home edition has now become rage inducing. I had a lot of patience for incompetence, but the intentional disruption of my work for making a few bucks is really something different.

Nah, not anymore - Linux is usable for ordinary daily tasks for more than 10 years now. And even gaming is in good shape thanks to Proton - that is, unless you have some particular choices which are known to not work.

I have a feeling that people in the West have assumptions about democracy being better for the society based on their own education levels and social advancement. Democracy is better if the general population have cultural affinity towards fairness, equality and respect for other religions. Democracy does not mean fairness, human values or such high moral standards that general people in the West assume. Democracy is just the will of the people. If they are uneducated, racists and supremacists, the elected government would represent that.
