> Could the great filter be something like developing language?

Perhaps it's a combination of factors? Dolphins are social animals that appear to be capable of complex communications among themselves, but don't have hands to manipulate their environment the way we can.

Apes have hands, but don't have complex language.

Another interesting one I've heard is getting into space, period. It's possible that there are other technological civilizations out there, but all stuck under a few hundred km of ice or on a 2-earth-mass monster where it's impractical to reach orbit.

Earth may only be special in being in a sweet spot between Mars (too small to hold an atmosphere or protect from cosmic radiation, hence no life) and Gliese 832c (with its low-orbit velocity of something like 15km/s, hence much less practical to put stuff in space).

> protect from cosmic radiation

That raises another issue of the planet having a magnetic core...

You can also get shielding with a thick enough atmosphere, or being under a solid ice/rock crust. But both of those also make it much harder to reach space.

Speak for yourself.

I don't all the pros and cons, but SAR can see through cloud cover.

If it's made with proper merino wool then that would explain the price. I've bought merino jumpers in that price range before, and they're well worth it since they're warm but also light-weight.

Interesting. If you were given the copy on a computer owned by your employer, is it your copy or theirs?

I believe it's theirs.

If I loan you my laptop brimming with free software, and you use it for a day, have I redistributed the software to you? No. You had use of a computer you didn't own executing the software, no copy was made. It's no different from the well-known SaaS loophole the AGPL attempts to close.

Driving around in other countries and then coming back to Australia really opened my eyes to how aggressive (especially towards cyclists) the drivers are here.

yes I really don't understand the hatred of cyclists - yes they might slow you down for 30 secs - is it really that big a deal?

The hilarious irony of drivers getting angry at cyclists is that by just driving their car they are adding more to congestion and commute times than the cyclists they're so irate at.

So, Manna is finally becoming a reality: http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm
