Perhaps the obese married men would have died of obesity-related issues had they not been married, but something attributable to their being married made them 3x more likely to survive.
This is Poland. It is customary for Slavic women to intentionally overfeed their men so they are less attractive to other women, to increase the chances of keeping the marriage/somewhat limiting the imbalance that naturally develops as the couple ages. They don't think of it, it's imprinted by their mothers since childhood.
I don't speak Polish but i know Russian, Belarusians (especially), Slovaks, and Ukrainians all do it. Czech women don't seem to be concerned with men or getting married overall so i doubt they do. True, i have no direct exposure to Polish culture save for Belarusian Catholics who are halfway Polish, but since they are religious, i think they do the same thing.
Finally, a study not done on mice. I’d be curious to see if the reverse also holds true — could I get married by weighing three times my current weight? :)
The study looked at 2,405 people. They were aged 50 on average and 35.3 per cent had normal weight, 38.3 per cent were overweight, and 26.4 per cent were obese.
I sensing a big advertising campaign for those dangerous fat reducing drugs for those fat married men in their 50's
so older, married guys were more likely to be fat, while the single guys who are trying to date (even at that age) are not. this just in: sky is blue, news at 11.
it's looking like 2/3s of the US, married or not, young or not, will qualify as obese, so I'm not surprised that numbers like this line up, even after factoring in Poland, age, etc.
