I do wonder if the handle shown in the article's image (from a Model 3 or Y) would actually fall under the ban though. It's flush, but it's fully mechanical and externally operated.


If power fails, the handles may not function properly, requiring manual override procedures.

There are hidden manual releases inside, but they can be hard to locate.


I know that's true on a Model S or X, but is it the case on the 3 and Y as well? Those exterior handles seem mechanical (but I could certainly be wrong).


While the handle movement is mechanical, the actual latch release is still electrically triggered when you pull the handle to open the door.
